This country trail leads from the entrance to Tai Lam
Country Park inTsing Lung Tau to the northern end
of Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. The route wends across
the Civil Aid Service's Yuen Tun Training Camp
and the ruins of old rural houses in the once thriving
Yuen Tun Village. Your gaze takes in the placid
Tai Lam Chung Reservoir and the Gold Coast seascape.
Walking upward,
the trail allows you to look back at Sham Tseng and
Ma Wan. The Tsing Ma Bridge that connects Tsing Yi
and Ma Wan is of grand scale. It is 2.2km long, and
is the world's longest road-cumrail suspension bridge.
It makes vehicle access to Lantau possible, and is
a famous landmark of Hong Kong.
Construction of
Tai Lam Chung Reservoir actually started in 1951.
The biggest component of the whole project - the
150ft main dam - was Hong Kong's most magnificent
concrete dam at the time. The reservoir was developed
from a river valley where several rural communities
lived. Old villages were Wu Uk, Kan Uk Tei, Tai Wai
and Tai Lam. The reservoir gets its name from the
main natural waterway Tai Lam Chung.
